  • Candle & Wick Care

    • Light your candles in a well-ventilated room, away from drafts or fans as this can cause uneven or rapid burning and formation of soot around jar/tin.
    • For tin/jar candles, make sure the candle is lit for at least 2 hours to ensure full melt wax pool (melted wax layer reaches the edges of the tin/jar about to ¼ inch deep) and to prevent tunnelling.
    • Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time, this can cause the wicks (cotton wicks) to slant or move which may lead to a dangerous flame.
    • Keep an eye on your candle when the wax level is low as the bottom of the tin can become quite hot. Rule of thumb is to stop burning the candle when the wax level gets to ~10mm.
    • Pro-tip for decorative candles such as the DIYSins pinecone, tree or rose candles: when the candle finishes burning instead of throwing away the remaining wax, why not use the remainder as a wax melt. This works so well, reduces waste of wax and fills the whole room with the lovely scents.
    • Trimming your wicks in between burns is very important both for the candle and your safety, slanted wicks or wicks that are too tall can produce high flames, smoking or soot. You can do this with the use of flat edged wire cutters/nippers or just by using your fingers to pinch off the burnt wick.
    • For wooden wicks such as the ones in DIYSins Tin candles, make sure to trim the wick to ~2mm above the wax after the wax solidifies, this helps the candle burn more efficiently and produce safe flames. For cotton wicks, trim to ~5mm above wax.
    • Make sure you keep the wax free of trimmings as they can act as a second wick when candle is re-lit which can cause uneven or rapid burning.
